Overall, it’s a great interesting book with a great cliffhanger ending but it can get intense with the religion and Hekat consistently getting her way does get annoying butI would recommend for those who: A truly epic fantasy of power and politics, treason and betrayal, and the rise and fall of Empires On the whole, this is a good and interesting novel.
I had previously read the Kingmaker, Kingbreaker series by Karen Miller, and though I did have some issues with her writing, particularly when it comes to dialogue and the use of very silly accents to signify socio-economic class, I thought they were good reads and wanted to try another series by the author. This book is actually somewhere in between 3. It was interesting to read but it did feel too over the top and draining at times we’ll get back to this.

Even her best qualities conspire to make her more scary and despicable. A pretty slave that would fetch a good price from Raklion; a singing, dancing, educated courtesan.
This is the story of how cruelty creates and perpetuates itself. Her thoughts, emotions, etc. Most of the characters are unlikeable, and aren’t interesting enough to make up og that. People don’t converse in this world, they emote. Many cannot grasp this book because fantasy novels generally contain some form of magical baddy and a medieval superman in plate-mail not spandex.
Hekat sees things in terms of black and white, which makes her reactions predictable and her few moments of introspection dull. At most, you can empathize with her feelings as a mother for what she is going through in that moment. This girl is ruthless.
If she is wronged and does not have the strength to retaliate, she remembers until she does. She hurts people and enjoys it.
