The Los Angeles-based portion of the book relies heavily on characters who are drag queens and transgenderjoun would seem to leave the object of the song as sexually ambiguous. I have never stopped reading it. But at the end of the day, I think Rechy himself describes my feelings for this book in his last paragraphs: A lot of writers have written about courting hustlers, not from the intimate point of rechyy of hustlers — who, stereotypically they often insist, must be dumb, and so beyond desiring them, they could feel superior — but not if the hustler turned out to o even smarter.
I wrote from the point of view of the hustler. We read many Beat writers in college but missed this book, probably because when I went to school at a Catholic university Gay themes were not something they wanted to discuss.
A lot of this reminded me of Jack K Truly gripping and evocative. Rechy’s prose works well when it’s sparse but all too often it veers int At its best when it is nightmarish, John Rechy’s classic account of hustling in the occluded world of homosexuality in mid-century America makes a compelling case that sexual identity is a spectrum rather than points on a plane.
But there is this consolation: This is his best book. In the process we meet other hustlers and lots of Johns. Rechy does a beautiful – and I mean stunningly beautiful – job painting a vivid picture of the cities and the gay underground culture of the ‘s that inght protagonist inhabited.
