It probably comes as no pwers that I really enjoyed this book. Dead in the Water. Strange little story of murder. However, as I went along the stories were increasingly dumb. A Fantastic Holiday Season. I was intrigued, so I bought the first book in chsrlaine Retriever series, “Staying Dead”. Some of the stories didn’t seem to be mysteries, though, such as The Boy Who Chased Seagulls, which view spoiler [tells about a boy who chased seagulls and then must spend the rest of his life combing the beach for the body parts which they stole.
This one has some pwoers stuff, but it also has a few stinkers. Still, the novelty carried me to the end and the idea will stay with me. Ratings and Reviews 0 2 star ratings 0 reviews. I read the anthology of fantasy mysteries because of the short story by Sharon Shinn, which I liked, although it wasn’t brilliant I think Shinn is generally better when her stories are at least novella length.
The events of this story are mentioned to in the 8th or 9th book though, which will probably be confusing to the reader if they’ve never read the story and they’ll feel as though they’ve missed something. It has its tongue pushed so hard into its cheek, I lost all interest in what it was trying to say. A nice mix of urban fantasy, horror, fantasy and science fiction around a common theme. I’m hoping that this will become a series of books one day.
Nothing to ruin the overall experience of this collection, but enough so that I couldn’t in all fairness give it a five-star rating. It worked for me as a short story. Most of the stories are good old-fashioned murder mysteries, except rather than set in the back-alleys of New York or Chicago or … they’re either in some fantasy realm, or among some extraordinary denizens of our world. I got this because I had an author alert at the library for Dana Stabenow for her mysteries. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. It was very nicely done, full of atmosphere and foreboding, but didn’t really have anything to do with magical detective work that I could see.
Nothing to deetction I love fantasy novels and I love mysteries. I have read this book countless time over the years since its release.
